Starting with Arcane Miniatures, who have extended their sale on ALL their miniatures.   They are also knocking off a further 5%, when you use the promotion code SEPTSALE.  So now there is no excuse, you can get some great miniatures and then enter their Arcane Challenge III Painting Competition.  Closing date for entry is 31st October, so there is ample time.  I know this Diplomat will be entering, with a Freebooter (Bad Fairy) miniature.

Reviewing Wargames is a new site, that aims to provide comprehensive reviews of wargames.  The difference here, is that every single system they review; is then auctioned off for charity.  There are already some big names already signed up, including Studio McVey, Tor Gaming, Otherworld Miniatures and Alternative Armies.  Watch this space for more news.

Fancy winning every colour primer made by The Army Painter?  Well pop over to their website and sign up to the newsletter, where you will added to the draw to win a full set (18 cans of primer goodness).

WorldWorks Games, have just released the last of the Mayhem Armoury TerralinX set.  Mayhem DESTROYED! is the shattered city-scape; with ruined buildings and destruction galore.  All done in rich detail, they are a great terrain resource.

Not really news, but something that I found interesting.  Bell of Lost Souls (BoLS) Wargaming News, posted an article on why Warmachine is so fun.   I can’t compare 40K, but I can say that Warmachine has appealled to me a whole lot more then any wargame ever has.

[Review] Dust Devils: Revenged

From Stories You Play owner Matt Snyder comes the new updated version of Dust Devils, entitled Revenged. Matt created Dust Devils in 2001, but this is an updated version with some tweaks and some additions for new ideas to extend the game further.

Dust Devils is about Redemption, or dealing with your inner devils to find redemption.  Set in the Wild West, it brings together the flavour of the wild west.  It conjures images of gunfights, cowboys, bar brawls and posses on the hunt for a killer.

With a very narrative/cinematic mechanic, players get to literally write the story of their character as game progresses.  So it will also appeal to those who enjoy descriptive roleplaying, building up a character through the collective story told.  There is a lot of reference material as well, Matt has also given several movie references; which could be used as material.  There is also a history of the Wild West; with details of the people and cultures of that violent and deadly time.

So will it appeal to others, perhaps those that aren’t favourable to the Wild West?  Yes, absolutely.  One of the new features, is the ability to adapt the game to other settings.

Already included in the book, are guides to create spy/espionage (Deathwish), japanese samurai (Ronin) or a neo noir (Concrete Angels) style of settings.  With those guides and a little imagination; it would even be possible to place Dust Devils in any setting you choose.

So now your not limited to the wild west, there are options to create a variety of settings for your players.   At the special price of $10, it is a great buy to add a little change of pace to a gaming group; or start a new and different style of campaign.

Want to get hold of it, nip over to DriveThruRPG to get it.

Mega News Update

Been a little busy the last couple of days, so here’s lots of news to catch you all up.

Starting with Privateer Press, who have been extremely busy this year with MkII.  They have also announced there is to be a feature film version, of their successful Monsterpocalypse.  Dreamworks will be producing it, while the awesome Tim Burton will be directing.  Also announced at Gen Con was the first images of the Warmachines computer game.  No dates have been announced yet, for the release of either of these.

On to Secret Skeleton Miniatures, who have just released images of their latest greens (on Facebook) – Sahuagin Raider I and Skeletal Soldier II.

Matt Snyder of Stories You Play, has just released the updated version of Dust Devils.  The award winning Wild West rpg, has been updated and revised to make the game all the more enjoyable.  A nice added feature of Dust Devils: Revenged, is that it includes alternate settings – Deathwish (Spy/Espionage), Ronin (Samurai) and the gritty Neo Noir; Concrete Angels (think Sin City by Frank Miller).   A review of it will be up shortly.

ENnies news now, where they are about to upload the edited version of the 2010 ENnies Awards.  Check out the ENnies blog site, towards the end of the week for more details.  You can also check out the latest submissions, which have been updated in the last day.

Phew nearly there.  Over to America now, with the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) about to start this weekend.  Despite it being mostly video gaming, a lot of the big names like WotC and Privateer Press will be there.

Lastly something that we have the sad duty to announce.

Charles S Roberts, founder of Avalon Hill, passed away on 20th August 2010.  Charles S Roberts is credited for being the Father of Board Wargaming, with his Tactics system in 1952.  He later went on to create Avalon Hill, which produced many wargames, with ingenious mechanics that have become standard in wargames today.   We at SoG salute a man, who brought something enduring to the world of Gaming.  RIP Charles.

Steamroller Event @ Intrepidations

Intrepidations in Perth, held their first ever Warmachine’s steamroller event today.  As the solitary player from the podcast, it was my duty uphold the honour of SoG.

With 16 players, it was a great turn out; with many of the Perth and Dundee players coming along.  With Hoards now being Mk II, it was open to both Warmachine and Hoards factions; which made for some interesting match ups.

First of all thanks to Ken Laidlaw for organising the event, given the turn out and how busy it was in the shop; it was a brilliant day.  Also thanks to Andy from Privateer Press Gangers ran the event, who’s help was invaluble to noobie players like me.  I’d also like to thank all the players who came along, without them it wouldn’t have been such a great and informative event.

The last person I want to thank is Gary Campbell, who owns Highlander Games in Dundee.  I played him in my second game, but also learned a lot about the gaming community in Dundee and his shop there.

Mind you, he wasn’t happy when my Nightmare picked up his Bloat Thrall.  Using the Double Handed Throw, to lob his Bloat Thrall at his Bane Thrall.  All that was left of the poor Bane Thrall, was two legs sticking out from under the Bloat Thrall.

So did I win anything? Well despite losing every single game, I did win Best Loser of the tournament.  In the random draw, Ken Laidlaw also won Best Painted Army; but declined the prize (Gift Certificate for Intrepidations, doh!).  So another name was randomly drawn again, which went to someone else.

Having tasted the tournament bug, I am looking forward to the planned event at Highlander Games on 31st October.

On to Mongoose Publishing, who have just announced they are reducing their prices for PDF’s on DriveThruRPG and Wargame Vault.  You can also pick up their latest magazine Signs & Portents 83, from both sites; or from Mongoose directly.

Last, but not least; we have Pig Iron Productions who we have mentioned before.  They have expanded the range of Feral miniatures, with the addition of Feral HQ.  A set of 4 mini’s, containing seperate head sprue and banner.

Gaming News

First up, perhaps the most anticipated news of them all.  Deathwatch the Collectors Edition is now on sale from Fantasy Flight.  If that wasn’t enough, for those that hadn’t gotten to see it at Gen Con; there is a video describing the metal (yes metal) box; with detachable Librarian’s Key.  A stunning piece to have in a collection.

Also from Fantasy Flight, is new troop packs for Tannhauser.   A set each of Union and Reich troops, each with two new troop types are on sale now from your local gaming store.

Privateer Press have released details of their December releases.  The first is a new Cygnar ‘jack called Triumph.  The other is a Cryx ‘jack, which is named Malice.  Players looking to have these in their armies, will need the Heavy Plastic Warjack Kit for their faction; in addition to the upgrade kit in order to build these mini’s.

Fans of a certain BBC sci-fi show, will be pleased to hear Crooked Dice have started Pre-Orders for their Scary Statue miniatures.  Whatever you do, do NOT blink!!
